IUI, or Intrauterine Insemination, which is called “تلقیح داخل رحمی اسپرم” in Persian, is a type of assisted reproductive technology in which washed and prepared sperm are directly injected into a woman’s uterus at the time of ovulation. The purpose of performing IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes, thereby increasing the chances of fertilization and pregnancy. This method is usually recommended for couples who have mild to moderate infertility problems.
Stages of IUI:
♦ Ovarian Stimulation: In some cases, ovulation-stimulating drugs may be used for the woman to increase the chances of pregnancy. ♦ Sperm Preparation: A sperm sample is taken from the man and washed and prepared in the laboratory to separate high-quality sperm. ♦ Sperm Injection: At the time of ovulation, the prepared sperm is injected into the woman’s uterus using a thin tube. ♦ Follow-up: After the IUI is performed, the doctor may prescribe tests to check if the procedure was successful.
Advantages of IUI:
♦ It is a relatively simple and minimally invasive procedure. ♦ Its cost is lower compared to other assisted reproductive technologies. ♦ It can be effective in cases where there are mild to moderate infertility problems.
Disadvantages of IUI: ♦ Its success rate is lower compared to IVF. ♦ In some cases, it may be necessary to repeat several IUI cycles. ♦ There is a possibility of multiple pregnancies if ovulation-stimulating drugs are used
IUI applications:
♦ Unexplained infertility ♦ Mild sperm issues in men ♦ Ovulation problems in women ♦ Cervical mucus problems ♦ Mild endometriosis
Important points:
♦ IUI should be performed by a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology in reputable centers. ♦ Before undergoing IUI, it is necessary for the couple to consult with their doctor about the advantages, disadvantages, and likelihood of success of this procedure.
