What is a Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of the uterus. In this procedure, a thin instrument called a hysteroscope, which has a small camera and a light source, is used. The hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and cervix, and it transmits images to a screen.

Types of Hysteroscopy:

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy: This is performed to examine the inside of the uterus and diagnose problems such as abnormal bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, or the presence of abnormalities in the uterus.
Therapeutic Hysteroscopy: In addition to diagnosis, this type of hysteroscopy allows for the treatment of certain problems inside the uterus. For example, small polyps or fibroids can be removed, adhesions inside the uterus can be resolved, or a tissue sample can be taken from the uterine lining for further examination.

Applications of Hysteroscopy in Gynecological Diseases:

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Hysteroscopy can diagnose the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding, such as the presence of polyps, fibroids, or uterine cancer.
Infertility: Hysteroscopy can play a role in investigating the causes of infertility, as well as in treating some causes of infertility such as intrauterine adhesions or uterine polyps.
Recurrent Miscarriage: In cases of recurrent miscarriage, hysteroscopy can help diagnose the underlying cause.
Removal of Polyps or Fibroids: Hysteroscopy can be used to remove small polyps or fibroids inside the uterus.
Resolution of Intrauterine Adhesions: Intrauterine adhesions can cause infertility or recurrent miscarriage. Hysteroscopy can be used to resolve these adhesions.
IUD Removal: If an IUD (intrauterine device) is difficult to remove from the uterus, hysteroscopy can be used for its removal.

Advantages of Hysteroscopy:

Minimally Invasive Procedure: Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure and does not require a large surgical incision.
Fast Recovery: Patients usually recover quickly after a hysteroscopy.
Less Pain: Hysteroscopy is generally associated with less pain compared to open surgery.
Disadvantages of Hysteroscopy:
Risk of Complications: Like any procedure, hysteroscopy can be associated with complications such as bleeding, infection, or damage to the uterus.
Need for High Skill: Hysteroscopy requires a high level of skill from the physician.
